Friday is June 1st, marking the start of National Aphasia Awareness Month. Aphasia affects an estimated 1 million Americans, most as the result of a stroke. Approximately 100,000 people are diagnosed with aphasia each year, including one-third of individuals with severe head trauma. NIDRR currently has three projects focusing on areas of intervention, training, and rehabilitation for persons with aphasia. IDRT Receives Tibbetts Award
The Institute for Disabilities Research and Training, Inc. (IDRT) (H133S110002), recipients of multiple NIDRR Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grants, received a Tibbetts Award from the US Small Business Administration. IDRT was recognized for their unique contributions as a "Model of Excellence for the SBIR Program." During its 27-year history, IDRT has created and commercialized over 70 software products, many with the support of the SBIR program. Among these, IDRT's MyASLTech offers multiple tools for users to learn American Sign Language (ASL), develop sign language graphics and video support for text, create ASL enhanced products, and build and administer quizzes with sign support.
Webcast: Funding Opportunities at the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation ResearchThe NIDRR-funded Project Empowerment: Building Research Infrastructure Capacity (H133A080060) will host a webcast, Funding Opportunities at the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR): Getting to Know the Programs, June 5th at 2pm EDT. Pimjai Sudsawad, ScD, OTR, Knowledge Translation Program Coordinator for NIDRR, will provide an overview of NIDRR and discuss funding opportunities, including specific funding programs for minority-serving institutions. The presentation will also include the review of NIDRR's mission and mandates, strategic approach, expected outcomes, and the peer-review process. Registration is free but required. The webcast will be archived for future viewing.

RRTC Co-Director Lee Saunders, PhD, will discuss the assessment of secondary conditions in a population-based study and compare these conditions between population-based and clinical cohorts. Survey of University Faculty with Mental Health Issues
The NIDRR-funded Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Participation and Community Living of Individuals with Psychiatric Disabilities (TU Collaborative) (H133B130014) is conducting a survey that aims to gather information about disclosures of mental health issues by faculty in academic settings. This survey is anonymous and all information is voluntary. Respondents must be 18 or older. This survey is being conducted in collaboration with Spelman College.

Source is an international online resource center designed to strengthen the management, use, and impact of information on disability and inclusion in development and humanitarian contexts. Source provides free access to a unique online collection of information resources. These include books, journals, manuals, toolkits, reports, posters, audiovisual materials, websites, and organizations. Many materials are from developing countries and include both published and unpublished literature not readily available elsewhere. Source also sends a quarterly e-bulletin highlighting new material added to the collection.
