As we head toward the end of the year, we want to say thank you to all of our readers and to the members of the NIDILRR community whose work we've had the pleasure of sharing. It was a year full of great celebrations and events: This year included the 25th anniversary of the ADA, the 40th anniversary of VSA, and the 50th anniversaries of the Older Americans Act and Medicare. What will 2016 bring? We'll be on hiatus over the holidays but we'll see you on January 6th for issue #195!
Disability Law Handbook in Spanish
The NIDILRR-funded ADA National Network (H133A110014) has published Manual de Derecho De Discapacidad de la Red Nacional de la ADA, the Spanish-language version of the Disability Law Handbook, both created by the Southwest ADA Center (H133A110027).The handbook provides a broad overview of rights and obligations under the ADA. There are sections on employment, state and local government, communication, transportation, housing, and much more.
myASL Quizmaker Featured in National Ed Tech Plan
myASL Quizmaker, technology developed by the Institute for Disabilities Research and Training under a NIDILRR SBIR grant (H133S110002), is featured in the 2016 National Education Technology Plan: Future Ready Learning - Reimagining the Role of Technology in Education from the Department of Education. myASL Quizmaker is highlighted as a tool for teachers to create customized tests, exams, and quizzes for their students who are Deaf and use American Sign Language (ASL).
TBI and Employment Research Highlighted in Archives Podcast
Jeffrey Cuthbert, PhD, co-principal investigator of the NIDILRR-funded Rocky Mountain Regional Brain Injury System Center (RMRBIS) (H133A070022), was interviewed in the latest Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (APMR) Podcast (MP3) from the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM). The interview focused on a new article published in APMR from several NIDILRR-funded Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Model System Centers (90DP0028, 90DP0034, 90DP0036, 90DP0037, 90DP0039, 90DP0047, 90DP0013) on ten-year employment patterns of working age individuals after moderate to severe TBI (abstract). Dr. Cuthbert also gave an overview of the Model Systems and their history.
Webinar: Implementing Early Psychosis Intervention in the Real World
The NIDILRR-funded Rehabilitation Research and Training Center for Pathways to Positive Futures (Pathways RTC) (H133B140039) will host a webinar, Implementing Early Psychosis (EP) Intervention in the Real World, January 26th, 1-2pm ET. Presenters will provide an introduction to EP history, practices, and resources, while addressing common implementation challenges and effective strategies. Presenters will also share ongoing opportunities for collaborative learning. Registration is free but required. This project is also supported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
Webinar: Mix It Up: An Example of Mixed Methods Approach in Research Focused on Gender and Race TOMORROW
The NIDILRR-funded Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Research and Capacity Building for Minority Entities (H133B130023) will host a webinar, Mix It Up: An Example of Mixed Methods Approach in Research Focused on Gender and Race, December 17th, 1-2pm ET. Presenters will use the article Perceived gender and racial/ethnic barriers to STEM success (abstract), published in Urban Education, to illustrate the fundamentals of mixed methods approaches in conducting research. Registration is free but required.
Webinar: Inclusion in Early Childhood Programs TOMORROW
The Departments of Education and Health and Human Services will host a webinar, Inclusion in Early Childhood Programs, December 17th, 3:30pm. Staff from both agencies will discuss the joint statement on inclusion in early childhood programs and why inclusion matters to states, early childhood programs, families, and young children with and without disabilities. No registration is required to view the live stream.
