Recommend a Study for Research In Focus

We highlight new and interesting findings from NIDILRR-funded studies in our reader-friendly summaries, Research In Focus. Do you have a recent article you would like to recommend for an upcoming issue? Please share it with us by sending it to Jess Chaiken at jchaiken@heitechservices.com!

What are our selection criteria?

  1. The article must be published in a peer-reviewed journal and available in English. It does not have to be published in an Open Access journal.
  2. The article must have been published, either online or in print, within the last 6 months.
  3. The article must include a clear attribution of NIDILRR funding.
  4. The funding must have supported the study activity itself, as opposed to supporting an author's time or clinical resources.

We are interested in a wide range of topics and audiences. Ideal articles feature research that will have an impact on practitioners and public alike, such as promising interventions and treatments that support participation, or reports that highlight new information useful to people with disabilities.

The final selection is at the discretion of NIDILRR staff. All submissions will be added to the acquisitions queue for REHABDATA and included in the NARIC collection.

What happens if your article is selected?

If your article is selected for Research In Focus, our lead author will begin by reviewing the article and summarizing using plain language and established quality standards. We strive to avoid highly clinical and scientific language or industry terminology and to provide clear, concise definitions for those terms we must use. A draft is submitted to NIDILRR staff for their approval. Once approved, we provide a copy to you to ensure we've accurately captured your findings and their implications for the community. We will do our best to estimate when the draft will be ready for your review.

How much time will you have to review the summary?

We ask for a three-day turn-around for this review so we may conduct one final review with NIDILRR staff before publishing. We understand you have many commitments on your time and staff resources. We are asking for a review of the accuracy of the content, not a full editorial review. Our goal is to take up as little of your time as possible but still produce a summary you will be pleased to share with your community.

How will we publish it and how can you share it?

We publish Research In Focus on Wednesday morning in English and Spanish. We include a brief teaser in our weekly News and Notes from the NIDILRR Community and Beyond. We also promote it in our social media streams and bring printed articles to conferences and presentations. You are welcome to share or republish the summary, whole or in part, in your own newsletter or website. You can download the PDF or link to the article from our website. We would appreciate attribution and/or notification.

We look forward to reading more of your excellent work!
