Dietary Guidelines for People with SCI
H133B090002 The NIDRR-funded Rehab Research and Training Center on Secondary Conditions in the Rehabilitation of Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury (H133B090002)has developed a new factsheet covering the dietary needs of people with SCI. While good nutrition is important for all, nutritional health can affect the bowel, bladder, and skin of individuals with SCI. This 4-page factsheet includes guidelines and suggestions for how to increase intake of healthy foods and balance calories. Download it (PDF) and let them know what you think!
NIDRR Co-Sponsors Two-Day Webinar on Aging and Disability
May 17th & 18th, the Administration for Community Living, the National Institute on Aging, NIDRR, and the Interagency Committee on Disability Research present Aging with a Disability: Demographic, Social, and Policy Considerations, a meeting of research, policy, and practice leaders to focus on the nation's challenge in meeting the needs of the growing numbers of Americans who are aging with disability. The free, two-day webinar features presentations examining the demographics, health, economic, and life course characteristics of persons aging with long-term disabilities and their access to and needs for health and social support services. The Center for Studying Disability Policy welcomes Dr. Lakin along with fellow panelists Bonnie O'Day, Todd Honeycutt, and Crystal Blyler to discuss the Future of Youth with Disabilities: Economic Success or Dependence? The forum is presented live, May 16th at 12pm EST, at Mathematica's Washington, DC offices and via webcast. Registration is required to attend in-person and by webcast.
Judith Cook Honored with Distinguished Faculty Award
Judith A. Cook, PhD, Director of the NIDRR-funded Rehab Research and Training Center on Psychiatric Disabilities and Co-Occurring Medical Conditions (H133B100028) was honored with the 2012 Distinguished Faculty Award from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. The award is given to senior faculty in recognition of their excellence in research, service to the profession, or distinction as educators. The honor recognizes individuals who have fulfilled the highest goals of an academician and are nationally and internationally recognized for their achievements.
Kessler ARRT Fellows Present New Research Findings
Postdoctoral fellows from the NIDRR-funded Neurocognitive Rehabilitation Advanced Rehabilitation Research Training project (H133P090009) presented their findings at several conferences during the first and second quarter of 2012: Lawanda Ford-Johnson, PsyD, presented "Bridging the Gap Between Lab and Community: Successful Recruitment and Retention” and “Neurological Disorders Affecting the Black Communityrdquo; at the Race, Ethnicity, and Disability State of the Science Conference in March. She also presented a paper titled, "Examination of the Impact of Cognitive and Emotional Functioning on Medication Adherence in MS" at the NARRTC conference in April. Olga Nikelshpur, PhD, also presented a paper at the NARRTC conference titled "Changes in Fatigue Following a Behavioral Treatment for Memory Impairment in Multiple Sclerosis: A Randomized Clinical Trial."
Webcast: Healthcare Access After SCI
Join Lee Saunders, PhD, of the NIDRR-funded Rehab Research and Training Center on Secondary Conditions in Individuals with SCI (H133B090005) and Center on Health Outcomes Research and Capacity Building for Underserved Populations with SCI and TBIfor a free webcast on May 29th at 3pm. The webcast focuses on health care access after spinal cord injury, assessing secondary health conditions as a function of access to health care after spinal cord injury, and identifying the extent to which African Amercians with spinal cord injury have equal access to health care compared to African Americans in the general population. Rehab Measures Database Seeks Reviewers
The NIDRR-funded Center for Rehabilitation Outcomes Research (H133B090024) maintains the Rehab Measures Databasewhich, since its launch in January 2011, has grown to more than 100 instrument summaries used by more than 20,000 visitors per month! As a part of their initiative to address the needs of rehabilitation clinicians and researchers, they invite clinicians and scientists to write or review instrument summaries. Contributors will be recognized for their efforts on the website and have an opportunity to influence evidence-based practice around the globe. The Future of Children Focuses on Disability
The Future of Children, a collaboration between the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University and the Brookings Institution, publishes The Future of Children journal twice a year. Contributors to the Spring 2012 volume (H133B090024) review research on childhood disability, including its definition, its prevalence and trends over time, and the costs that disability imposes both on the individual child and on the child’s family. They consider disability within the context of the nation’s educational, health insurance, and medical systems, and examine the impact of emerging technologies on the experience of disability.
