Abstract: This is part 5 of 18 in a series of videos from the National Goals in Research, Policy, and Practice meeting. The meeting aimed to advance a research agenda that influence policy and practice for and with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Speaker talks about employment and how being employed not only enables individuals with an intellectual and developmental (I/DD) disability to earn an income, but also offers them the opportunity to live independently and interact with the community. Provides information about the employment rate of individuals with I/DD, service systems in place now, and quality interventions proven to work. He presents three challenges within the system and offers solutions he believes will help. These challenges include: (1) existing infrastructure limits access; (2) effective interventions are trapped in an exclusive system; and (3) most people do not use formal services and supports. He also believes that professionals in the field need to have an honest discussion about where we are now and where we’re headed and that changes need to be made within the system in order to employ more individuals with I/DD, which in turn will help them lead the lives they choose and want. Run time: 9 minutes 59 seconds.
