Dysphagia in spinal cord injury

Abstract: This video is designed as a training tape to assist with the early detection of potential swallowing difficulties in patients with tetraplegia. The Rehabilitation Research Center at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is conducting research to determine the incidence and to identify the specific risk factors of dysphagia in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). Topics discussed include premorbid conditions, questions to ask patients prior to the swallowing evaluation, and factors that can influence a safe swallow. Two patients are shown having a bedside swallowing evaluation and a video fluoroscopy to compare and access the accuracy of each procedure. Run time: 12 minutes 45 seconds.
