Abstract: Study identified barriers and facilitators to full community participation using focus groups of people with mobility impairments, their significant others, healthcare professionals, and built environment professionals (architects and planners). The focus groups differed in their assessment of the built environment as a facilitator and barrier to participation. Built environment professionals were the only group who ranked the built environment more frequently as a facilitator than a barrier. The mobility-impaired and significant other groups found the built environment to be very significant barriers to participation. Products, tools, and personal support were listed as facilitators rather than barriers by most of the focus groups. Social institutions and social cultural norms were considered unanimously as significant barriers to participation. The findings highlight the need for successful interchange between built environment professionals and people with disabilities before construction begins.
Descriptor Terms: ARCHITECTURAL ACCESSIBILITY, ARCHITECTURAL BARRIERS, COMMUNITY LIVING, MOBILITY IMPAIRMENTS, PLANNING, UNIVERSAL DESIGN.
