Number of Pages: 100. Abstract: THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO IDENTIFY AND STUDY THE ORIGINS OF OCCUPATIONAL DISABILITY AMONG PUERTO RICAN YOUTHS. ANTHROPOLOGICAL FIELD RESEARCH TECHNIQUES, INTERVIEWS AND QUESTIONNAIRES WERE USED TO COLLECT QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE DATA FROM A SAMPLE OF 30 YOUTHS, THEIR PARENTS AND TEACHERS OVER A 2-YEAR PERIOD. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT CULTURAL DIFFERENCES BECAME DISABILITIES WHEN EDUCATORS DISREGARDED THE DIFFERENCES, AND THAT THEY DETERMINED THE STUDENTS OCCUPATIONAL EXPECTATIONS. A WELL DESIGNED BILINGUAL- BICULTURAL PROGRAM FROM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL WAS DEEMED NECESSARY TO REDUCE THE ACADEMIC PROBLEMS THAT LEAD TO DROPPING OUT.
