Abstract: Article examines factors influencing survival in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) and bladder cancer. Medical records of 8 survivors with SCI who had survived at least 5 years with bladder cancer were compared with those of 12 control subjects who had died from bladder cancer. The 2 groups were of similar age at bladder cancer diagnosis, had been injured equal lengths of time, and had similar levels and completeness of SCI. Survivors were more likely to be nonsmokers, and have a history of squamous metaplasia and papillary cystitis. Controls were more likely to have multiple genitourinary risk factors. Fewer screening cystoscopies and biopsies were performed in survivors of bladder cancer than in those who died of bladder cancer.
