Continuing to head toward the first day of school: August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM), sponsored by the National Public Health Information Coalition (NPHIC). Immunizations are especially important for children with disabilities and those aging with and into disability, as they may be more susceptible to complications from illnesses such as pneumonia and influenza. NPHIC offers a NIAM toolkit which includes specialized information, social media content, and event ideas, as well as logos and banners which correlate with each weekly theme (this week is Not Just for Kids). Employment Research and KT Strategies Databases
The NIDRR-funded Center on Knowledge Translation for Employment Research (KTER) (H133A100026) recently debuted two new knowledge translation (KT) databases. The Employment Research Database features articles addressing interventions that lead to successful employment outcomes. The KT Strategies Database associates a variety of KT strategies and tools with research evidence. The KT Strategies Database is operated jointly with the NIDRR-funded Center on Knowledge Translation for Disability and Rehabilitation Research (KTDRR)
How to Write and Report About People with Disabilities - 8th Edition Now Available
The NIDRR-funded Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Community Living (H133G100082) released the 8th edition of its Guidelines: How to Write and Report About People with Disabilities. The guidelines focus on "person-first" language, and have been adopted by the American Psychological Association and the Associated Press Stylebook, among others. The updated guide includes new terminology and new sections on Rosa's Law, community concepts, and exceptions. The brochure and companion poster may be downloaded free in PDF. Print copies may be ordered by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Webcast: Promoting Research Findings Through Plain Language Summaries
The NIDRR-funded Center on Knowledge Translation for Disability and Rehabilitation Research (KTDRR) (H133A120012) will host a webcast, Plain Language Summaries, August 22nd, 3-4pm EDT. Merete Konnerup from the Campbell Collaboration Users Group will explain some of the best practices and principles for writing plain language summaries of research findings for a wide range of stakeholders. Registration is free but required.
New Teachers' Guide Supports Including Parents with Disabilities in the ClassroomParents with Disabilities and their Children: Promoting Inclusion and Awareness in the Classroom, a new guide from the NIDRR-fundedNational Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families, is helping teachers to include parents with disabilities in school and classroom activities. The free 26-page guide (PDF) answers questions about terminology, accommodations, and etiquette, and offers suggested activities and reading to promote awareness about parents with disabilities.
ADA Audioconference Series: Athletic Opportunities for Students with Disabilities
The NIDRR-funded Great Lakes ADA National Network Center (H133A110009), in collaboration with the Institute for Human Centered Design, will host an audioconference, Athletic Opportunities for Students with Disabilities, August 20th, 2-3:30pm EDT. Attendees will learn how colleges and universities can better integrate mainstream athletic programs as well as how to create adapted programs. Registration is free but required by August 19th.
Webinar: Accessibility of Web Information
The NIDRR-funded Great Lakes and Southwest ADA National Network Centers (H133A110029), in collaboration with the RESNA Catalyst Project, will present a webinar, Accessibility of Web Information: Implications for How the Public and Private Sector Conducts Business, August 21st, 3-4:30pm EDT. This session will address the accessibility issues associated with the explosion of online/internet-based information and what the future holds in this arena. Registration is free but required.
State of the World's Children 2013 - Children with Disabilities
UNICEF's The State of the World’s Children 2013 report is dedicated to children with disabilities and examines the barriers that deprive children with disabilities of their rights and keep them from participating fully in society. Additionally, it lays out some of the key elements of inclusive societies that respect and protect the rights of children with disabilities, adequately support them and their families, and nurture their abilities. The site includes the full report in multiple languages, as well as video interviews and photographs of children with disabilities around the world.
